In emergencies we tend to pray more than usual for divine intervention. Christian Science encourages us to stay in a constant state of communion with our Father-Mother God, always turning to God for direction, and listening for His angel messages as a natural part of our daily life. It's not difficult and doesn't take a long period of training. It's sometimes easier to do in emergency situations because we feel like life is out of our control, and we're already looking to God for answers. I find that if I quiet thought and listen (often mentally on my knees), I can feel God's love and be led to express love to others and to take whatever God-inspired steps are before me.

We've heard from several church families of amazing protection in the current fires. Our hearts overflow with love for those facing challenges at the moment and deep gratitude to God for His presence and power.

Dear SoCal Struggling Hearts
"Trials are proofs of God's care" may sound cold and indifferent in this moment. But this statement by Mary Baker Eddy can turn your thought from fear and dispair to hope and expectancy of the good only God has prepared for you.
Multitudes are standing watch and praying with you, right now. We will continue until your tears are dry. Although we are unseen and unknown, we love you dearly.

This week's lesson is titled "God the Preserver of Man," and it tells us that no matter what the situation is (whether it be a fire, flood, etc.), we are always protected by the love of God. And that is a very comforting thought! In fact, there are signs of God's care everywhere, even in what seem like scary and hopeless situations, such as these fires that we have been having. Firefighters are working day and night, trying to put out these fires, while other people are sheltering those who have been displaced from their homes by the fires - there are also other signs of God's care in these situations. So we should pray that those who are affected by the fires are safe and sound, and that they realize that they are - and always will be - under the protection of God.

Stilling the storm — wind and fire.

Mrs. Eddy to Irving Tomlinson.  “We should have the same control over the weather that we have over our bodies.  I remember when I was preaching that on one occasion the sky became black and a flash of lightning was so severe that the soloist fell in a faint.  I declared ‘ Let there be peace,’ and almost instantly the sun came forth.” MBECH 332. Mrs. Eddy was a peacemaker.

Christ Jesus said to the storm, “PEACE, be still!”

“While she was giving us some instruction of work to be done, there came a very heavy thunderstorm, Mrs. Eddy stepped to the window.  It made me so still, for I felt the divine presence as she spoke with God, and immediately the storm ceased ...” MBECH 194

“There are no clouds to hide God’s face, and there is nothing that can come between the light and us — it is divine Love’s weather.”  MBECH 354-355

”When I wanted to dispel a storm, I did not say, ‘There is no thunder, and no lightning,’ but I said, ‘God’s face is there, and I do see it.’”  MBECH 385

There is no wind, smoke, fire to hide God’s face, and these cannot come between the light and us.  Divine Love owns the weather, and controls every thought.  Love casts out all destructive or threatening elements of fire and wind.

“Fire.   Fear; remorse; lust; hatred; destruction; affliction purifying and elevating man.”  SH Glossary

"Wind. That which indicates the might of omnipotence and the movements of God's spiritual government, encompassing all things.”  SH glossary

Love is the ONLY POWER in the universe.  Love is our Defender, our Refuge, our perfect assurance.  We are not afraid!

Marginal heading:  The impotence of hate.
“Teach your students the omnipotence of Truth, which illustrates the impotence of error. The understanding, even in a degree, of the divine All-power destroys fear, and plants the feet in the true path, — the path which leads to the house built without hands “eternal in the heavens.” → Human hate has no legitimate mandate and no kingdom. Love is enthroned. That evil or matter has neither intelligence nor power, is the doctrine of absolute Christian Science, and this is the great truth which strips all disguise from error.”
SH 454:4

Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Ps 46:1-11

They who seek the throne of grace,
Find that throne in every place:
If we live a life of prayer,
God is present everywhere.

In our sickness, in our health,
In our want, or in our wealth,
If we look to God in prayer,
God is present everywhere.

Then, my heart, in every strait,
To thy Father come, and wait;
He will answer every prayer,
God is present everywhere.
Hymn 341:1-3

Wisdom, intelligence, clear thinking is present everywhere, and I do see it.  Nothing is out of control.  Nothing exists which does not reflect the power of Love’s goodness, and the goodness of Love’s power.

“The pent-up elements of mortal mind need no terrible detonation to free them. Envy, rivalry, hate need no temporary indulgence that they be destroyed through suffering; they should be STIFLED from lack of air and freedom.”
Mis. 356:5

There is no oxygen to feed this fire or to generate destructive winds.  The pent up elements of evil are STIFLED from lack of air and freedom.  God RULES!  Evil has no life, energy, or movement in the allness of Good.

There is no vapid fury of mortal mind — expressed in earthquake, wind, wave, lightning, fire, bestial ferocity — and this so-called mind is self-destroyed.
SH 293:21-23

“The only power of evil is to destroy itself. It can never destroy one iota of good.”
SH 186:19-20 The

Today, may you feel the “love of God, which passeth knowledge,” and experience the “...unspeakable peace which comes from” that love.  As we pray without ceasing, let us hold in our hearts the expectation that the Kingdom of Love is present — within our hearts, and “at hand.”  With immeasurable love, Melanie

Praying with each and every individual who is facing down earthquake, flood, drought, wind and/or fire

The false belief or antipode of the one Mind, one Life, one Principle, one God, good, may appear as destructive forces of wind and fire, loss and fear. In such times, "cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought." (SH493) "When the smoke of battle clears away, you will discern the good you have done, and receive according to you deserving." (SH22)

Error must destroy itself:

15 [Jahaziel] said, “Listen carefully, all [you people of] Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and King Jehoshaphat. The Lord says this to you: ‘Be not afraid or dismayed at this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Go down against them tomorrow. … 17 You need not fight in this battle; take your positions, stand and witness the salvation of the Lord who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.’” (II Chron 20:15-17 - AMP)

As I was turning to God to understand how to better pray during this time of challenging fires I googled "Christian Science  prayer for wildfires" and came across an article "Prayers for wildfires" by Jan Keeler, CS in which a key passage from Science and Health (p.228) says, "There is no power apart from God.  Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God."   Wow, was I not "acknowledging" another power by being glued to the TV as I watched the destruction?  I can say No to another power and Yes to God's governing control.  His/Her love for all of us will and does bring us out of any challenge of any kind.  "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble". Psalms 46:1

12 | Isaiah 25:1, 4

O Lord, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.

For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall."
I thought of the good that can come from fire: it can purify and cleanse the soil, remove the unneeded and dangerous underbrush, provide warmth and light, change properties of metals so they can be formed into useful tools. That's the result of God's manifestation and control over His creation, which is ever present and omnipotent. No other force has control or dictates the impact of God's expression and qualities. There is no destructive power that can change a manifestation of godly qualities and expression into damaging force, so His power for good, for calm, for helpfulness and for harmony is all that is power, has presence, has effect, intelligence and reality. There is no other force but good, which is its own force, operating under God's law of ever present and omnipotent harmony. All mountains, valleys, streets, homes, structures are included and one under the kingdom of God. All are under the-protective of-good shadow of His mighty wings.

In my thoughts and prayers

Rachel

Just like Allen I am so grateful for our beautiful lesson sermon last week, God the preserver of man, it was just the inspiration needed. The Lord preserves man and beast.
Thoughts I am working with now are:
Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

Ps 104:30
The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares.

SH 574:27-30

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Isa 40:28-31

Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy.

SH 249:6-8

Love supports the struggling heart until it ceases to sigh over the world and begins to unfold its wings for heaven.

SH 57:28 Love

Love to all,
Rachel

Thoughts for you from Breaking Bread together this morning:
  • Good is the only force, the only power.
  • Love inspires, illumines, designates and leads the way. (SH 454:18)
  • Love's face is right where fire and destruction seem to be.
  • Watch, and pray daily that evil suggestions [fear, images, sorrow, doubt, loss, fatigue]., in whatever [disguise], take no root in you thought nor bear fruit (My 128:30)
  • Do not surrender to discouragement!
  • If your endeavors are beset by fearful odds, and you receive no present reward, go not back to [fear, worry], nor become a sluggard in the race. When the smoke of battle clears away, you will discern the good you have done (SH :22:14)
  • PUSH -- Pray Until Serenity Happens.
  • Do not let emotions like "it's taking too long," limit your faith and hope in and love of God.
  • God is Love and Love is constant, PERMANENT!
  • Love is impartial and universal in its adaptations and bestowals  (SH 13:2)
  • Not one is alone or without lovingkindness, peace and JOY!
  • Be Thou, O God, exhalted high; And as Thy glory fills the sky, So let it be on earth displayed...  (Hymn 1)
Yes, we may not be facing-down the same human need but we are totally with you extolling Love, Life and Spirit as All-in-all.
