Jointly Maintained Christian Science Reading Rooms were established as early as 1936.  They are located wherever the public can have access to Christian Science literature for purchase and reading. Many are located at airports.  In the Los Angeles community, we are located in the beautiful Bonaventure Hotel where people from all over the world can have a place to study and pray in a quiet atmosphere.

Christian Science was founded by  Mary Baker Eddy in 1866 and Christian Scientists rely on spiritual healing to comfort and bless. However, the denomination is not doctrinal and its adherents may choose any treatment for healing that they feel is best for them.

Open House & Walking Tour of Downtown
Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.

“The Jointly Maintained Christian Science Reading Room will sponsor an Open House with a Walking Tour of downtown Los Angeles on Sunday,  March 18, at 2pm.  Our guide is Mr. Bruce Hale.
Bruce lives in the Foothills and is a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist La Canada Flintridge. For many years Bruce worked in DTLA and over the years saw many changes in the city which have led to the city as it is today and as it continues to develop in its current construction boom.  Bruce enjoyed walking around the central city and its adjacent districts at times. He has led urban walks in Los Angeles for the Sierra Club.  He is a local Sierra Club  hike leader and also an international tour leader for the Angeles Chapter Sierra Club. He is a graduate of UCLA and UCLA Law School. In  recent years, travel has become one of his passions. He has particularly traveled to Asia on Sierra Club-sponsored trips.
Our walking tour on March 18, 2018  will cover the neighborhoods of the Financial District and Bunker Hill largely surrounding the JMCSRR. We may thus include [not necessarily in this order] the Watercourt [former site of the JMCSRR], Angels Flight [just recently reopened], Central Library, Pershing Square [subject to renewed redevelopment], Grand Central Market [which has become highly gentrified in recent years], the Bradbury Building [historic, but still in use], the Civic Center [with the recently developed Grand Park], and the Walt Disney Concert Hall [we can see the garden]. We may include more or less depending on how much participants want to walk. The walk should take about 2 hours. A good general map is the DASH Downtown Los Angeles map published by LADOT. A copy will be distributed.
Please RSVP as soon as possible so that we can prepare adequately. The JMCSRRLA will remain open during the tour to accommodate those who prefer to stay, children are welcome. For questions and more information, contact: Jackie Reid, Librarian, 213-928-0920 or e-mail:”
