What is healing prayer?
- Prayer is communicating with God and spiritualizing thought.
- Prayer and belief in God are a foundation upon which we rely in times of trouble and when we need comfort and strength.
- Many use prayer as their tool of choice for guidance and solving problems, resulting in natural healing.
What is the key
to effective prayer?
Mary Baker Eddy’s chapter on Prayer in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is a very thought-provoking analysis of prayer, and how it benefits us and those around us. This book is based on the Bible, and is a study tool to help us understand our relationship to God and adhering to God’s laws. It is a Christian book for prayer and healing. Eddy talks about the motives for prayer and how we can pray effectively, using Christ Jesus as a prime example.
The Lord’s Prayer
Matthew 6: 6-13
In introducing the Lord’s Prayer given to us by Jesus Christ, the Bible says, “When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”
Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, gives us a spiritual sense of the Lord’s Prayer on page 16 of her healing book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
Our Father which art in heaven,
Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Adorable One.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy kingdom is come; Thou art ever-present.
With God all things are possible
The first line in the chapter on “Prayer” in Science and Health says, “The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God, — a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love.”
Understanding God is the key to healing prayer, because if we understand Him we will understand our spiritual nature as His reflection. God is good, and as children of God we all reflect good. This is one of the foundational teachings of Christian Science.
