Depression and grief healed during disaster

Christian Science & the power of healing prayer

Each week Christian Scientists are given an opportunity to study a different spiritual topic in the Bible lesson. One particular week, the topic was Life. I had been struggling with depression and grief during the Thomas Fire and mudslide in Montecito, California.

The media was full of stories about devastation and people missing or deceased. Friends of friends had perished, homes and businesses were destroyed, and things seemed bleak. But there is always hope, and a change in my thinking brought relief and healing.

One simple thought about Life brought this change. Our true lives are spiritual, not material. God is the Life that allows us to exist as a spiritual idea that can never end. God is infinite Spirit, and we are His infinite idea.

Here are quotes from the lesson that I had been working with.

“If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.” John 8:51

"Because Life is God, Life must be eternal, self-existent." Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

All depressing thoughts I had about others and any lingering fears or concerns about these events were brought to an end. I found complete freedom and peace, and was able to get back to a productive work schedule.

Reading the Bible lesson and daily prayer enable me to keep a clear head and move forward on my spiritual journey and bless everyone around me as Life goes on, eternally!
